St Kilda ball magnet Jack Steven hopes club veterans Nick Riewoldt and Leigh Montagna will play on next year as the Saints firm as likely finals contenders for the first time since 2011.
The triple best and fairest winner says the form of the two club champions has warranted a new deal.
The distinguished duo is both out of contract at season's end.
"At the moment they're going pretty well. They've just got so much experience," Steven told ESPN. "It's just up to the club [to sort out]. I don't know how they'll work that out, but they will somehow.
"It's above my pay grade to work out contracts and stuff. They've both happy to just to wait until the end of the year, sit down at the club and see what happens."
And as the club ascends to September action, Steven said Riewoldt and Montagna's experience will help many of the team's young brigade handle the pressure of finals action.
"When I started at the club, we were making grand finals, so hopefully we get back there and go one better," he said. "'Roo' and 'Joey' will be vital for us at the back season as we fight for a finals position."
