Ravens keep three running backs on 53-man roster (but that could change)

The Baltimore Ravens made 39 moves on Friday and Saturday, trimming their roster to the NFL-mandated 53 players. Here’s a closer look at the final moves:

Most significant move: It's tough to really find one because there was little drama surrounding the major cut down. The interesting one was the Ravens only keeping three running backs (Terrance West, Buck Allen and Danny Woodhead). It wouldn't be a surprise if the Ravens upgraded at this position and picked up a running back who was cut Saturday. West and Allen have never gained more than 800 yards in a season. Baltimore cut pass-catching rookie Taquan Mizzell, which signifies the Ravens are confident that Woodhead will be ready for Week 1 despite missing time with a hamstring injury. It's believed to be the first time the Ravens will go without a full-time fullback. Baltimore is expected to use more two-tight end looks and the team can use tight end Nick Boyle or defensive lineman Patrick Ricard as the lead blocker.

Going heavy on defense: The Ravens kept 28 players on defense and only 22 on offense. Baltimore didn't cut a defensive lineman, sticking with all eight. This was easily the team's deepest position, but it's difficult to see Baltimore carrying that many defensive linemen. The Ravens could still look to trade someone like Carl Davis or Willie Henry.

Adding experienced depth: The Ravens traded for two offensive linemen in as many days to add more proven blockers on the interior. Baltimore sent a conditional seventh-round pick to the Arizona Cardinals for Tony Bergstrom, and the Ravens acquired Luke Bowanko from the Jacksonville Jaguars for an undisclosed draft pick. That allowed the Ravens to cut Jeremy Zuttah and waive Matt Skura.

Undrafted streak continues: Baltimore extended its streak of keeping an undrafted rookie on its 53-man roster to 12 years, which is second only to the Indianapolis Colts. This year, three undrafted rookies made the cut with the Ravens: Ricard, cornerback Jaylen Hill and linebacker Bam Bradley.
