The Buffalo Bills have see-sawed between quarterbacks over the past five weeks because of injury and performance, but signs point to Tyrod Taylor returning under center this Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.
"When healthy, Tyrod will be our starter," coach Sean McDermott told reporters Wednesday. "He’s made some progress. He’ll get most of the work today in practice, not quite all the work, though."
Taylor was listed as a full participant in practice Wednesday, putting him on track to play Sunday. He was inactive last Sunday with a knee injury that forced him from a Dec. 3 loss to the New England Patriots.
Backup Nathan Peterman was listed as a limited participant as he remained the concussion protocol. Peterman suffered his head injury in the fourth quarter of last Sunday's win over the Indianapolis Colts, causing emergency quarterback Joe Webb to finish the game.
If Peterman is not cleared to play Sunday against Miami, Webb will serve as Taylor's backup.
There is increasingly clarity about how the Bills will approach their quarterback position this week, but their plan for Weeks 16 and 17, as well as for next season, is as cloudy as ever.
Here are some possible scenarios to consider:
If the Bills lose Sunday and Taylor struggles: Buffalo would be 7-7 and their postseason chances -- currently at 12 percent, according to ESPN's Football Power Index -- would continue to shrink. The Bills might not be mathematically eliminated, but their odds of making the playoffs would be long. If Taylor's play is one reason for the loss, McDermott could consider turning to Peterman to evaluate the young quarterback and give him developmental time before the end of the season. However, starting Peterman on the road at New England is far from an ideal environment for Peterman to get his feet back under him after his five-interception performance at the Chargers.
If the Bills lose Sunday but Taylor performs well: The playoffs would become a more remote possibility with a loss, but it would be harder to pull Taylor if he was not the reason for the loss. Starting him at least one more week at New England would be a no-brainer.
If the Bills win Sunday: It is hard to envision McDermott switching back to Peterman with the playoffs potentially on the line in New England. Starting a rookie on the road for an 8-6 team against one of the AFC's best teams would be asking for a repeat of Peterman's disastrous start in Los Angeles that led to an avalanche of criticism against McDermott. Regardless of how Taylor performs Sunday, a Bills win would almost guarantee he starts again in New England.
