SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Every day, every practice, every throw is part of the Denver Broncos' competition at quarterback between Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch. Here’s a closer look at their day:

Trevor Siemian

On a day when both Broncos and 49ers practiced together in shells -- helmets and shoulder pads but no leg pads -- Siemian opened with the starters in team drills. Overall, he had another steady day as both quarterbacks worked in the relative comfort of the pocket.

Wow moment: Siemian’s best moments came when the Broncos picked up the pace. He had a quality toss to fullback Andy Janovich in traffic and later found wide receiver Demaryius Thomas on a similar route for what would have been a big gain.

Whoa moment: Siemian didn’t throw an interception but had one pass batted down in team drills and didn’t have a big play against the 49ers' secondary. It was a measured day all around for the offense -- plenty of work in the run game to go with short or intermediate routes, but Siemian never found a deep target.

Paxton Lynch

As has been the pattern throughout camp, Lynch did his best work when the Broncos were not in a fully padded practice. In 7-on-7 drills where he was working out of the shotgun, Lynch threw in rhythm and on time for much of the workout. The result may have been his best day in almost two weeks.

Wow moment: In a practice where big plays were hard to come by, Lynch found wide receiver Hunter Sharp up the right sideline in 7-on-7 work, getting the ball over 49ers cornerback Keith Reaser for what would have been the biggest completion of the day.

Whoa moment: The middle of the field continues to be a trouble spot, even on a day when Lynch didn’t throw an incomplete pass in team drills. His biggest issue now is he shows a hitch on throws between the numbers. During the regular season that would certainly be a topic of discussion among defensive coordinators.
