Lions go wide receiver in Todd McShay's first mock draft -- but should they?

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- The Detroit Lions are going to be in need of a wide receiver. Realistically, they are probably going to need two, or three, or maybe even four new faces in the room.

Top receiver Kenny Golladay is coming off an injury-riddled year and is a free agent -- although the team might use the franchise tag to keep him. Marvin Jones, Danny Amendola and Jamal Agnew also are headed toward free agency.

All the Lions have in the room are Quintez Cephus, who had 20 catches for 349 yards and two touchdowns last season, and Geronimo Allison, who opted out of 2020 due to COVID concerns.

That’s it. That’s their room.

It would make Todd McShay's selection of LSU receiver Ja’Marr Chase -- himself a 2020 opt-out -- in his latest mock draft a sensible one for the Lions. The 6-foot, 208-pound receiver set SEC records in 2019 with 1,780 yards and 20 touchdowns. He runs routes exceptionally well and has the ability to break games. In 12 of his 14 games in 2019, he had at least one reception of 20 yards or more. He had nine 100-yard games and three 200-yard games.

No matter who the Lions' quarterback is, Chase is a player the Lions could build around.

However, if the draft played out the way McShay has it, it’s tough to see the Lions going with Chase, as talented as he might be. If quarterback Justin Fields is sitting there at No. 7, a year after the team passed on Tua Tagovailoa and Justin Herbert, the Lions should take Fields.

Yes, Fields might not help the Lions win immediately but with a new general manager, a new head coach and an understanding the defensive side of the roster needs to be rebuilt, it might be wiser to start with a future franchise quarterback and build from there.

This scenario, too, could be open to a trade down to try and acquire more draft capital to help replenish the defense and some offensive positions on a team that needs a talent infusion.
