Christine Michael a decent fallback, but Packers need more running backs

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- At this point, it appears the Green Bay Packers' running game might look a lot like it did at the end of last season.

It's a good thing there's plenty of time for more roster additions.

But for now, the Packers have added Christine Michael back into the mix along with Ty Montgomery. Michael, who re-signed with the Packers on Wednesday, and Montgomery are the only two running backs on the roster.

Terms: Not immediately available.

ESPN Top 150 ranking: Not ranked.

Grade: C. Michael played in only nine games after the Packers claimed him off waivers from the Seahawks in mid-November: the final six games in the regular season and all three playoff games. His lone highlight was a 42-yard touchdown run against the Bears in Week 15. The Packers also used him as a kick returner, but he made some questionable decisions. He rushed for a team-high 47 yards on 10 carries -- all in the second half -- in the wild-card playoff win over the Giants after Montgomery got banged up and had to miss some snaps.

What it means: It gives Michael the chance to go through an offseason in the Packers' system and better familiarize himself with the offense. The knock on Michael has always been his ability to pick up an offense and make the right reads and decisions within that system. It also means Montgomery won't be the most experienced back in the room. He didn't switch over from receiver until October of last year. The only other running back the Packers have in the fold is Don Jackson, who has agreed to an exclusive rights free-agent deal but hasn't officially signed it yet.

What's the risk?: The only risk is if general manager Ted Thompson stops here. There has been no movement with any other veteran free-agent running backs, but this move doesn't preclude them from going after the likes of Adrian Peterson, LeGarrette Blount or Jamaal Charles. Perhaps the Packers will wait until after the draft to see if they still need another running back. One way or another, whether it's with a free agent or a high draft pick, the Packers shouldn't be done with the running back position.
