GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Some teams look like they don't have one capable quarterback. The Green Bay Packers look like they have several.
To no one's surprise, Aaron Rodgers looked sharp in what was an unexpected appearance in Saturday's preseason game at Washington.
But what followed Rodgers was as fine a display of backup quarterbacking as you'll see in preseason games, when backup offensive linemen make it more of a scramble drill than usual.
First, Brett Hundley showed the same kind of command of the offense he did in 2015, when as a rookie he led the NFL in preseason passing yards. Later, undrafted rookie Taysom Hill electrified the Packers' sideline with a zig-zagging 23-yard touchdown run. Only Joe Callahan, who took two series in between Hundley and Hill, failed to put any points on the board.
After Rodgers led an impressive 15-play, 75-yard touchdown drive that he capped with a 3-yard touchdown toss to new tight end Martellus Bennett, Hundley played the rest of the first half and the opening series of the third quarter. He completed 9 of 10 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown -- a 5-yard swing pass to rookie running back Aaron Jones three plays after he placed a perfect sideline pass to Jeff Janis for a 38-yard gain.
"I thought Brett probably had one of his best nights as a Packer," coach Mike McCarthy said.
It was an important showing for Hundley, who looked a little rusty in last week's preseason opener after he missed most of last summer's action because of an ankle injury.
"He's picking up where he left off from after his rookie season," Rodgers said. "He had a great rookie campaign in preseason and was hurt last year. The stuff you see on the field is the stuff we see at practice and you guys see it during training camp. He gets out there and once he finds his rhythm and his comfort, he makes plays. He's throwing the football well, he's moving around the pocket well and he's continuing to take strides. It's fun to watch. Again, he's a great kid. He works really hard at it, he's a lot of fun to be with in the room and compete with every day at practice."
Hill followed up his impressive performance in the preseason opener with another one.
"Taysom played very well, I feel like I've said that seven times already," McCarthy said. "But he played very well."
The 26-year-old rookie (he turns 27 next week) completed just 6 of 11 passes for 49 yards, but it was his running -- something he did effectively in college at BYU -- that was on display. He ran six times for 38 yards, including the 23-yard scoring scamper that he finished off with a stiff arm on Redskins cornerback Dashaun Phillips.
"He had a nice run on a fourth down to get us a first down and then the touchdown," Rodgers said of Hill. "We were watching his highlights the other day, actually pulled it up for the group when he hurdled that guy -- I think it was against Texas. He's super-athletic and he's just a great kid. He's been working really hard. It's fun to see those guys get out there and play well."
