No haircuts, no tweets for Packers' fifth-round OL Cole Madison

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Cole Madison’s last haircut came in 2013. His last tweet happened, well, never.

No, the offensive lineman from Washington State isn’t your cookie-cutter draft prospect.

The Green Bay Packers’ fifth-round pick should fit in well with an offensive line group filled with characters -- and a fellow longhair in left tackle David Bakhtiari.

To be sure, the fact that Madison has not had a full-fledged haircut since before his high school prom and does not have a Twitter account played no factor in the Packers’ decision to pick him at No. 138 overall. Rather, it was 47 starts at right tackle in the Cougars’ pass-happy offense and the versatility to move to guard, where the Packers plan to try him at first (meaning he wasn’t drafted to replace right tackle Bryan Bulaga, whose status seems shaky coming off a second career ACL reconstruction).

But there was something likable about the outgoing 6-foot-5, 313-pound Madison’s first impression -- a conference call on Saturday with reporters at Lambeau Field.

“Oh I actually got my hair trimmed two days ago,” Madison said. “But before that, [the last haircut] was prom for high school.”

Madison might have the longest hair and the shortest social media profile of anyone in the draft.

“I do not have a Twitter account,” he said. “I'm just kind of an old-school guy, I've not really dabbled in the social media stuff. Don't need to look at people's food they post and all that stuff.”

Packers West Coast scout Sam Seale described Madison has “a mean guy” who has “the ability to hunker down and open the hole on the inside.”

The mean part did not come through over the phone.

“I think I'm a nice guy when it comes to it, but ultimately I'm not afraid to get my hand a little dirty,” Madison said. “Playing this position, you've got a screw a little loose at least.”
