It’s time to officially pull the plug on the Dion Jordan experiment in Miami.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Jordan is suspended for the entire 2015 season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy for a second time. The Miami Dolphins defensive end also violated the league’s substance abuse and performance-enhancement policies in 2014. Tuesday's third strike is enough cause for the Dolphins to go in different direction.
The Dolphins stuck with Jordan through prior struggles -- mainly for his potential -- but Jordan failed to reward the team's patience on or off the field. He has recorded just three sacks in two seasons and never developed into anything more than a part-time role player and special-teamer. But it is Jordan's off-the-field behavior that has cemented his status as Miami's biggest draft bust of the past several years. Miami traded up nine spots to select Jordan No. 3 overall in 2013.
Miami won't miss Jordan much in terms of scheme. He was the fourth defensive end behind starters Cameron Wake and Olivier Vernon and backup Derrick Shelby. Miami already has a promising young replacement ready to fill Jordan's role in Terrence Fede. Jordan's role on special teams also is easy to replace.
Jordan is likely done in Miami, and his football career now is in jeopardy. But at this stage, it's more important to have concern for his personal well-being. Jordan told the Miami media following last year's suspension that drugs are not an issue in his life. That proved to be untrue just a few months later.
Jordan must spend the next year getting the help he needs away from football. That is the only chance he has of making something out of his disappointing NFL career.
