The grind commences for the New York Giants players and coaches. It began Tuesday and (they hope) ends next February, with a slight summer break somewhere in there.
Coach Ben McAdoo’s message was consistent when he addressed the Giants on the first day of their voluntary offseason workout program. It always is.
"Our biggest challenge is going to be handling success, and we’re going to find a lot about ourselves," McAdoo said recently at the NFL’s annual meetings. "There is only one goal in this game. It’s to put the trophy in the case, the ring on the finger, the banner on the wall, the team picture on the team meeting room wall. That is it. We want to win it. That is why we’re in it. There is nothing else. That is why we work the way we work."
The offseason schedule (dictated by the collective bargaining agreement between the players and league) will consist of three phases, each allowing slightly more taxing work than the next. It will stretch from mid-April until mid-June.
Phase 1: Two weeks when activities are limited to strength and conditioning and physical rehabilitation only.
Phase 2: Three weeks that include on-field workouts when players can receive individual instruction. Drills can be run and team practice is permitted on a "separates" basis. No live contact or team offense vs. defense drills are allowed.
Phase 3: The final four weeks of the offseason program when teams can conduct a total of 10 organized days of team practice, or OTAs. No live contact is permitted, but 7-on-7, 9-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills are permitted.
