Eagles' 53-man roster projection: Rookie RB Donnel Pumphrey on the bubble?

Here's an updated 53-man roster projection for the Philadelphia Eagles heading into Thursday's preseason game against the Miami Dolphins:

Quarterbacks (2): Carson Wentz, Nick Foles

Foles recently returned from a sore elbow. If the Eagles are not convinced that the injury is behind him, it could open the door for a player like Matt McGloin.

Running backs (4): LeGarrette Blount, Darren Sproles, Wendell Smallwood, Corey Clement

It could come down to Donnel Pumphrey and fellow rookie Clement. We'll give the edge to Clement with the thought that the Eagles will successfully find a way to stash Pumphrey and give the 5-foot-9, 176-pound back a chance to bulk up a bit.

Wide receiver (5): Alshon Jeffery, Torrey Smith, Nelson Agholor, Mack Hollins, Marcus Johnson

The Jordan Matthews trade opens up a spot for Johnson, who has had a strong summer. If they end up keeping six wide receivers, former Houston quarterback Greg Ward, fellow rookies Shelton Gibson and Rashard Davis, and Bryce Treggs will be among those vying for the spot.

Tight end (4): Zach Ertz, Brent Celek, Trey Burton, Billy Brown

Brown, an undrafted rookie out of Shepherd, has opened some eyes this summer. He could still use a strong close to the preseason.

Offensive line (9): Jason Peters, Lane Johnson, Jason Kelce, Brandon Brooks, Isaac Seumalo, Chance Warmack, Stefen Wisniewski, Halapoulivaati Vaitai, Dillon Gordon

The front office traded versatile linemen Allen Barbre and Matt Tobin this offseason but still seem to have a solid group. Backup tackle is the biggest question mark.

Defensive line (10): Brandon Graham, Fletcher Cox, Tim Jernigan, Vinny Curry, Chris Long, Derek Barnett, Destiny Vaeao, Beau Allen, Elijah Qualls, Alex McCalister

Allen is still recovering from an injured pec. If he can't get back in time, he might start the season with an injury designation.

Linebacker (6): Jordan Hicks, Nigel Bradham, Mychal Kendricks, Najee Goode, Kamu Grugier-Hill, Joe Walker

Can the Eagles slide fifth-round pick Nathan Gerry onto the practice squad? The answer to that will influence how this group is assembled.

Cornerback (6): Jalen Mills, Ronald Darby, Rasul Douglas, Ron Brooks, Patrick Robinson, C.J. Smith

Former CFL player Aaron Grymes should be under consideration for a roster spot as well. Rookie Sidney Jones (Achilles) will likely start off on an injury list.

Safety (4): Malcolm Jenkins, Rodney McLeod, Chris Maragos, Corey Graham

Hard-hitting Terrence Brooks (5-foot-11, 200 pounds) could find himself a roster spot as well.

Specialists (3): Caleb Sturgis, Donnie Jones, Jon Dorenbos

Sturgis has missed a couple field goals this preseason but still seems to have the support of the coaching staff.
