Carolina Panthers at Detroit Lions
Ford Field, Detroit

Stephania Bell's perspective

(Updated Oct 6, evening) Amon-Ra St. Brown appeared on the injury report this week with an abdominal strain, something he began to feel after the Packers game according to coach Dan Campbell, who spoke with reporters Friday. Campbell noted the injury happened during the game but he was able to finish. St. Brown was held out of practice throughout the week and Campbell said the team would know more about his status on Saturday.

When the team's official injury report came out late Friday however it listed St. Brown as Doubtful, a strong indicator that he will not play on Sunday against the Panthers.

Despite his non-practice status, there were some early positive signs for St. Brown. When he spoke with reporters Thursday he appeared upbeat, saying he felt "pretty good" and indicating his goal was to play Sunday. He had been working pretty intensely on the side during practice and hit what he thought to be one of his "top speeds" while running this week. When prompted about his actual speed, he said it was about 21 mph. Given that core strength (of which the abdominal muscles are a significant part) is critical for running, including achieving top speed, St Brown being able to hit that velocity was a favorable benchmark. While the Lions are holding him out this week, perhaps to help ensure that he does not put himself at risk for a longer-term injury, the hope is that this will not be a protracted absence.

Jahmyr Gibbs was added to the injury report Friday (hamstring) and was listed as a limited participant. Whether this is something to be concerned about or whether this was just a precautionary move is unclear. It's also not clear just how much of the practice he participated in to earn that designation. However, now he's listed as Questionable heading into Sunday and the combination of the late add and the body part -- especially in the absence of any more specific information -- raise some concern.

Tennessee Titans at Indianapolis Colts
Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis
Sunday 1:00 PM ET

Stephania Bell's perspective

Oct 5: Jonathan Taylor was back for all to see as he rejoined his teammates for practice Thursday (he was present for Wednesday's walkthrough but that session was closed to the media). He also spoke with reporters and addressed the ankle issue that has had him on the Physically Unable to Perform list until now, although he was designated to return earlier this week (and the Colts have 21 days from that designation to activate him to the 53-man roster).

According to Taylor, he is "finally healthy" after rehabbing since January from surgery on his right ankle. Last season, he suffered the original injury in Week 4, missed Weeks 5 and 6, returned for Weeks 7 and 8, missed Week 9, returned the following week and played until re-injuring his ankle in Week 15 after which he was placed on Injured Reserve for the remainder of the season. It's fair to say that despite some solid production from Weeks 10-13, Taylor never really achieved full health after the original injury (the up-and-down nature of the injury across the season is how ankle instability often presents) and surgery became a clear necessity in the postseason.

Taylor said he believed it had been over 290 days since he last stepped on the field for play or practice, noting his "number one goal is to attack this first practice." While the Colts have not formally indicated whether or not Taylor will play Sunday, back-to-back full practices Thursday and Friday would point in the right direction.

New Orleans Saints at New England Patriots
Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, Massachusetts
Sunday 1:00 PM ET

Stephania Bell's perspective

Rhamondre Stevenson (thigh) was limited every day in practice and is now listed as Questionable to face the Saints. It's unclear when he sustained the injury but it certainly appears to have slowed him some this week. Could this lead to more work for Ezekiel Elliott? The Patriots offense hasn't exactly been lighting up the charts but if Stevenson is either limited or out entirely, it does potentially present more opportunity for Elliott.

Philadelphia Eagles at Los Angeles Rams
SoFi Stadium, Inglewood, California
Sunday 4:05 PM ET

Stephania Bell's perspective

Oct 6: Cooper Kupp has yet to play this season but it appears that this is about to change, perhaps as soon as this week. Kupp began the season on IR after suffering a hamstring injury on August 1 and a subsequent "setback" shortly before the season began. Setback was the word that appeared in early reporting but coach Sean McVay clarified that it was more of a situation where he didn't feel comfortable, was experiencing tightness and it was causing apprehension. The team, smartly, elected to place him on injured reserve to both allow him time to progress with regards to the hamstring and to prepare himself for football.

There is a reason the NFL has incorporated acclimation periods into training camp as players prepare initially to return to contact practices and later to actual football games. When a player like Kupp -- who is returning from a nearly year-long layoff due to ankle surgery and a subsequent hamstring injury -- is re-entering the sport, the workload volume needs to be taken into account.

Kupp's back-to-back full practice sessions Thursday and Friday bode well for a return this week, barring a surprise, but expect him to be monitored closely as he does resume competition.

Kyren Williams suffered a bruised hip during a career-best performance in Week 4 when he touched the ball 28 times, a substantial increase from prior games. When he didn't practice Wednesday, coach Sean McVay said it was a precautionary move to allow him to rest, adding that he expects him to play on Sunday. Williams returned to practice on a limited basis Thursday, a positive sign. Expect him to take the field in Week 5 if there are no setbacks.
