Agent: Titans sign veteran QB Trevor Siemian as backup

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Titans changed up their quarterback room on Wednesday by signing veteran signal-caller Trevor Siemian. He worked out for the Titans on Monday and will now get to compete with Logan Woodside to back up starter Ryan Tannehill.

Siemian signed a one-year deal with the Titans, according to his agent, Mike McCartney.

Before starting 10 games for Tennessee last season, Tannehill missed 24 games from 2016 to 2018. Siemian gives the Titans a veteran option should Tannehill go down.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Siemian was a seventh-round draft pick in 2015 by the Denver Broncos, out of Northwestern. He started 14 games for Denver in 2016 and finished with 3,401 passing yards along with 18 touchdown passes and 10 interceptions. Siemian started 10 games in 2017, but he only attempted six passes over the past two seasons with the Minnesota Vikings and New York Jets.

When Sam Darnold was diagnosed with mononucleosis in Week 2, the Jets turned to Siemian to start against the Cleveland Browns on Monday night. In the second quarter, he suffered significant ligament damage in his left ankle when his ankle bent awkwardly on an outside-the-pocket hit by Myles Garrett, who was penalized for roughing the passer. He underwent surgery and was lost for the remainder of the season. He wound up playing only 15 snaps for the year, completing just three of six passes for 3 yards.

In a corresponding move, the Titans are releasing 2020 seventh-round pick Cole McDonald.
