PBA coaches approve league protocols for return to practice

All PBA coaches are onboard with the league protocols set to be implemented once practices resume later this month.

In a meeting with commissioner Willie Marcial, the league's 12 coaches were accompanied by their respective team managers Friday afternoon and reportedly said the guidelines were "doable."

According to a report on the PBA's official website, all teams are required to undergo testing for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) three days before the resumption of training. Testing will also take place every 10 days, and all training facilities will be disinfected using standard hospital procedures.

Players will also have to follow the "closed-circuit" method that limits their travel only from their homes to practice facilities and back.

"I think it's good. All we have to do is follow it," Barangay Ginebra coach Tim Cone said in the report.

"I think the PBA has put up an effective guideline to safeguard the players. It's just a matter of attitude from the players to maintain it," NLEX coach Yeng Guiao was quoted as saying.

Suggestions were also reportedly aired out to Marcial. An inquiry was also forwarded asking when scrimmages would be allowed again.

Guiao also asked about the league's tolerance and was quoted asking, "How do we define cluster cases from an outbreak?"

"Tinanong niya kung ano 'yung threshold, kung outbreak na ba 'yon at titigil na ang practice ng lahat ng teams. Itatanong ko pa sa governors kung ano ang threshold na maganda," Marcial said.

Marcial will meet with the Board of Governors on Saturday. Practices are expected to begin five to seven days after they convene.

Meralco Bolts head coach Norman Black called it a "very productive meeting" and praised Marcial and league officials for setting up protocol that will pave the path for a safe return to practice.

"The commissioner and his staff did a good job of explaining the protocols and guidelines for us to follow so we create a safe environment for everyone involved," Black told ESPN5 in a text message.

"There were a few kinks that Commish wanted to iron out in his meeting with the Board of Governors tomorrow, but it looks like it's all systems go," he added.

Return to play protocol was out of the equation and will be discussed at a later date.

When practice resumes in a few weeks, all Bolts players, including the recuperating Raymond Almazan and Noy Baclao, will be up and ready.

"They should be ready when the season begins. No concerns but I'm just hoping everyone stays safe," the multi-titled coach explained.

Furthermore, the 62-year-old mentor is confident the league can resume its 45th season later this year.

"I'm hopeful," closed Black.
