Packers still waiting for first-round pick Kenny Clark to make an impact

Kenny Clark, the No. 27 overall pick, has played in all 12 of the Packers' games on the defensive line but made little impact on the stat sheet. Jeffrey Brown/Icon Sportswire

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Like usual, the Green Bay Packers kept all seven of their draft picks coming out of training camp, and they’re all still on the roster. But their impact has been minimal. Perhaps that’s what you’d expect when picking mostly in-the-trench players. Here’s a look at the what the 2016 draft class has done so far and what the future holds:

Grade: C-minus

Best rookie: In perhaps a sign of what this draft class is all about, it’s fitting that an offensive lineman gets the nod here. Second-round pick Jason Spriggs bailed the Packers out in a big way after right guard T.J. Lang broke his foot Nov. 13 against the Titans. They tried Don Barclay the next week at Washington but eventually rolled the dice on Spriggs, who had never played guard before. A tackle by trade, Spriggs held his own at guard in Lang's absence.

Most improved rookie: Fourth-round pick Dean Lowry wasn’t getting much playing time for most of the season, but something defensive coordinator Dom Capers saw in practice recently prompted him to give Lowry a chance. A week after the defensive end didn’t play a single snap against Philadelphia on Nov. 28, he recorded his first NFL sack and also batted down a pass in an 18-snap stint against the Texans. He followed that up with a second sack this past Sunday against the Seahawks while playing a season-high 34 snaps.

Most disappointing rookie: It takes time for pass-rushers to develop, but the Packers certainly thought third-round pick Kyler Fackrell would make a bigger impact. He has two sacks but otherwise contributed only one quarterback hit and now has a late-season hamstring injury that has kept him out the past three games.

The jury is still out on ... Kenny Clark: Defensive-line coach Mike Trgovac sang the praises of the first-round pick after Week 13, even after he played only seven snaps against the Texans. “Sometimes those guys don’t show up on the stat sheet,” Trgovac said of Clark. “He’s a big, strong, physical kid, and he’s going to be, like I said, he’s got a bright future here.”

Undrafted rookie check-in: The Packers have six undrafted rookies on their active roster and one them, Geronimo Allison, is playing ahead of a draft pick. The receiver has moved ahead of fifth-round pick Trevor Davis on the depth chart. Quarterback Joe Callahan, who began the season on the active roster, is back on the practice squad after stints with the Saints and Browns.
