INDIANAPOLIS -- Missing a field goal or an extra point is not something that happens often to Indianapolis Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri.

Missing a field goal and an extra point in the same game is definitely a rare sight for the 44-year-old kicker. Yet it happened to Vinatieri in the Colts’ Week 1 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, when he missed an extra point and a 38-yard field goal.

Those two misses fit right in with the rest of the day for the Colts in their 46-9 loss to the Rams.

“The first field goal I hit the upright,” Vinatieri said Thursday. “I thought I hit it well. Left my foot, it hooked on me a little bit. Probably a little bit of wind, not a great kick in addition. As far as the extra point, I probably carried that over [from the missed field goal] when you’re supposed to clear it out of your mind and keep going. Didn’t have a good day, obviously, none of us did. Try to put that behind me and move on.”

Last Sunday was the first time since Week 2 of the 2007 season that Vinatieri, who is third on the NFL’s all-time scoring list, missed an extra point and field goal in the same game.

“Obviously it would be nice if we had a game the next day to get it off your back, but thinking about it and watch film on it,” Vinatieri said. “Kicked [Wednesday] and going to kick again [Friday] and just get that ugly day behind us. The only thing we can do at this point is forget about it and move on. Hopefully we’ll get a bunch of attempts this next week [against Arizona].”

Vinatieri was quick to say his two misses had nothing to do with the change in long snapper and holder during the offseason. Luke Rhodes in the new long snapper and Rigoberto Sanchez is the holder after Vinatieri spent so many years working with Matt Overton and Pat McAfee

“They’re doing a good job,” Vinatieri said. “It’s obviously been some changes since last year, some changes since last cut down in the preseason, but to their credit they’re working hard and I just have to do my job and get better no matter where it’s at, what it is…I have a lot of confidence in those two guys.”
