Aaron Colvin, Paul Posluszny among Jaguars' free agents not expected to return

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Jaguars' loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday turns attention toward the 2018 season. There are other personnel moves to consider beyond whether Blake Bortles will be back as the starting quarterback (his $19.053 million contract becomes fully guaranteed on March 14).

The Jaguars have 10 unrestricted and restricted free agents whose contracts will expire in March. Here’s a quick look at each as well as an educated guess about their future:

Unrestricted free agents

QB Chad Henne: He’s been good for Bortles as a mentor and has a good relationship with offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, but he’s unlikely to be back. If Bortles is back, the Jaguars likely will draft a quarterback and it would be a surprise for them to keep three quarterbacks.

WR Marqise Lee: Lee has said he’d like to return, but he’s likely going to get a better offer elsewhere. The Jaguars could bring him back at the right price, but it would be interesting to see where he would fit because rookies Keelan Cole and Dede Westbrook developed into solid players over the second half of the season.

WR Allen Robinson: Robinson had the best training camp of anyone on the roster, so his injury in the season opener was a huge blow to the offense. After the team’s quarterback decision, Robinson has to be the No. 1 priority. The Jaguars have some leverage because he missed 2017 and they may try to get him to sign a one-year, prove-it deal if they can’t work out anything longer. They also can use the franchise tag on him, which would be approximately $16 million.

LG Patrick Omameh: The Jaguars may bring him back and let him compete for a spot.

LB Paul Posluszny: He is not expected to be back after seven seasons with the Jaguars, especially with the development of second-year player Myles Jack. Don’t be surprised to see Posluszny, who is second on the Jaguars’ all-time tackles list (973), end up with Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Gus Bradley. He certainly knows the system and Bradley is a big fan.

LB Lerentee McCray: He was signed as a special-teams player and was solid there. Wouldn’t be surprising for him to return because he also was with special-teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis in Denver.

CB Aaron Colvin: He’s going to get starter money from someone else and the Jaguars will not be able to afford him. They have too much money invested in Malik Jackson, Marcell Dareus, Calais Campbell and A.J. Bouye, plus the looming mega-contract they’re going to give to Jalen Ramsey, to pay Colvin.

LS Matt Overton: Carson Tinker will be back next season after missing 2017 with a torn ACL.

Restricted free agents

RB Corey Grant: He’s expected back. He made a big impact in the first half of the AFC Championship Game and averaged 8.8 yards per touch on offense during the regular season. The Jaguars should use him more in that capacity in 2018.

DB Peyton Thompson: He was one of the Jaguars’ best special-teams players, so he’s expected back as well.
