Jaguars are without surprise cuts, but keep 10 offensive linemen

Tyler Shatley, left, could start at center for the Jaguars in Week 1 if Brandon Linder is unable to come back from a knee injury that he suffered in a preseason game. Reinhold Matay/USA TODAY Sports

The Jacksonville Jaguars cut or put on injured reserve 36 players, trimming the roster to the NFL-mandated 53 players Saturday. Here's a closer look at the final cuts:

Most significant move: It is a bit surprising the Jaguars kept 10 offensive linemen, including three interior reserves in Tyler Shatley, Chris Reed and Josh Walker. However, that might be an indication the knee injury center Brandon Linder suffered in the second preseason game will linger into the early part of the season. Both Shatley and Reed can play center and guard, and Shatley would be the starter at center if Linder can't go against the New York Giants in Week 1.

Safe ... for a week: Defensive end Dante Fowler, Jr. is suspended for the season opener for violating the league's personal conduct policy and does not count against the 53-man roster. That means someone has to go when Fowler comes off the reserve/suspended list after next weekend because the Jaguars are unlikely to keep 11 defensive linemen. Second-year DE Dawuane Smoot, the Jaguars' third-round pick in 2017, could be caught in the numbers game there. He battled foot and hand injuries throughout much of camp and the preseason.

One undrafted rookie sticks: Of the 16 undrafted rookies who were with the team for the final preseason game, only cornerback Tre Herndon made the 53-man roster. The former Vanderbilt player made it at one of the toughest positions, too. In addition to Jalen Ramsey and A.J. Bouye, the team signed D.J. Hayden to a three-year, $19 million contract ($9.45 million guaranteed) to be the nickelback and brought back veteran Tyler Patmon. Herndon's size (5-foot-11, 185 pounds), sub-4.5 40-yard dash, and production at Vandy earned him an invite to camp. He took advantage of the extra reps that trickled down when Ramsey missed two weeks and beat out second-year player Jalen Myrick and fellow undrafted rookie Quenton Meeks for a roster spot.
