KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs cut 37 players Saturday, trimming their roster to the NFL-mandated 53 players. Here's a closer look at the final cuts:

Most significant move: The Chiefs signed cornerback David Amerson during the offseason hoping he could be part of the solution as they tried to replace Marcus Peters and four of their other top cornerbacks from last year. But during the preseason, Amerson played nothing like he had for the Raiders earlier in his career and was released. Amerson, signed as a free agent during the offseason, was the victim on multiple big passes in each of the three preseason games in which he played. The Chiefs prepared for the move in recent days by signing one corner, veteran Orlando Scandrick, and trading for another, rookie Charvarius Ward.

Sorensen on the 53: The Chiefs kept safety Daniel Sorensen on the active roster, meaning they intend to get him back at some point this season. Sorensen, a starter, injured his knee and broke his leg during training camp. A player must be put on the initial 53-player roster before being moved to IR if the team intends for him to return that season.

Heavy on the OL, at RB: The Chiefs had some depth on both the offensive line and at running back so they went deep at both positions. They kept nine offensive linemen, one being rookie Kahlil McKenzie, who played on defense in college but has been converted to guard. He's a developmental prospect who figures to play little or none this season. The Chiefs kept four running backs and a fullback. The runners include Spencer Ware, their 2016 leading rusher who missed all of last season because of a knee injury, and undrafted rookie Darrel Williams.
