FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The New England Patriots have given starting safety Patrick Chung the chance for an $800,000 raise in 2017, increasing his incentives from $900,000 to $1.7 million, according to league sources.

Chung, who agreed to an extension with the team last offseason that runs through 2018, started every game for the team during its Super Bowl-winning season last year, posting 91 tackles and an interception.

The Patriots have made significant investments in the safety position, as no team in football utilized three safeties on a higher percentage of snaps last year. Devin McCourty (signed to a five-year, $47.5 million deal in 2015), Chung and Duron Harmon (re-signed to a four-year, $20 million deal this offseason) are an integral trio for the secondary.

Chung is in his second stint with the Patriots and has had a career revitalization with the team.

The team also recently beefed up the incentives of tight end Rob Gronkowski, giving him the chance to be the highest-paid tight end in football in 2017.
