METAIRIE, La. -- Drew Brees laughed Wednesday as he recalled New Orleans Saints linebackers coach Joe Vitt telling his story of tearing his Achilles and breaking a wrist while chasing car thieves away from his home in the middle of the night.

"It is absolutely what I would expect him to do," Brees said of the fiery 61-year-old coach. "I was like, ‘Was there any inkling just to call the cops?' I mean, that's what the police (are) for. But, here, let's chase after these guys in your socks.

"Just listening to Joe Vitt tell the story about it is priceless."

Vitt had to ride around practice on a motorized cart Wednesday -- something both Brees and coach Sean Payton acknowledged is probably driving him nuts.

But he never missed a day of work and came out of the incident well enough to earn some playful ribbing.

"We're all able to laugh about it," Brees said. "Obviously I'm just glad he's OK. And in true Joe Vitt fashion, the first thing he said to me, he kind of just shook his head because he knew we were all chuckling, and then he said, ‘I won't let you down. I'm here every day, I'm gonna be grinding. I just can't jog from drill to drill. I gotta push the button on the cart.'"
