Saquon Barkley looks every bit the No. 2 overall pick

A breakdown of the New York Giants' 2018 draft class and its progress after three weeks of training camp:

Saquon Barkley, RB, first round: He looked every bit the No. 2 overall pick before tweaking his hamstring at practice last week. A 39-yard run on his first carry of the preseason was the clincher, and there doesn't appear to be any panic about the injury. Barkley is expected back soon. His ability as a receiver has stood out at training camp. Catching 70-80 passes this season doesn’t seem unrealistic.

Will Hernandez, G, second round: He has worked exclusively with the first-team offense at left guard and looks like he belongs. Hernandez has shown a good mix of power and technique. He’s going to be fine as a Week 1 starter.

Lorenzo Carter, OLB, third round: He started camp slowly but has flashed more in recent weeks. His long arms are a problem for offensive linemen off the edge. Carter is working his way into the rotation. He had a sack in Week 2 of the preseason against the Lions that was negated by a questionable penalty call on Mark Herzlich.

BJ Hill, DE, third round: He has passed every test so far, impressing in the spring, summer and preseason. Hill knows how to play and use his hands. He should start on the defensive line alongside Damon Harrison and Dalvin Tomlinson come Week 1.

Kyle Lauletta, QB, fourth round: He had an up-and-down training camp, somewhat expected for a rookie quarterback. His throws lack zip and he has struggled with accuracy on the deep ball at practice. But Lauletta has displayed poise and athleticism in the preseason. You can see the potential. He has gotten better as the summer progressed.

RJ McIntosh, DE, fifth round: This is headed toward being a lost season for the Miami product who underwent surgery in the spring for what is believed to be a thyroid problem. Coach Pat Shurmur called it an “extended rehab-type situation.” McIntosh has spent the summer on the active/non-football injured list. He has yet to practice as a Giant.
