Ryan Mathews, Jason Peters 'questionable' for Cowboys game

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia Eagles’ final injury report of the week raises as many questions as it answers. That makes a little analysis necessary.

The report lists left tackle Jason Peters (back), running back Ryan Mathews (groin), linebacker DeMeco Ryans (hamstring) and wide receiver Nelson Agholor (ankle) as “questionable” for Sunday night’s game at Dallas.

The report also says that Peters did not participate in practice Friday, for the fourth day in a row. Meanwhile, Agholor and Mathews were listed as being full participants in Friday’s practice.

But the Eagles’ Friday practice is very light, essentially a walk-through with little running or football activity involved. So it is possible for a player to participate even if he’s not in good enough condition to play in the upcoming game.

Ryans was listed as having limited participation in Friday’s session. Added to his absence from Tuesday and Wednesday practices, that suggests Ryans is less likely to play. Ryans missed the Eagles’ game in Carolina before their bye week.

If Ryans can’t play, that will solve one problem for the Eagles. They are expecting inside linebacker Kiko Alonso to play for the first time since injuring his knee Sept. 20 against Dallas. Alonso has practiced all week and was listed as “probable” on Friday’s report.

It was going to be a challenge to get enough playing time for Alonso, Ryans, Mychal Kendricks and Jordan Hicks. If Ryans is out, the Eagles can postpone that problem for a week.

It is harder to get a read on Mathews’ situation. He pulled a groin muscle during the Carolina game. He stayed in the game for a while, running for a 63-yard touchdown, before finally coming out.

Mathews practiced Wednesday but was not available Thursday. That indicates a setback with the groin muscle. His return to the lighter Friday practice doesn’t necessarily mean Mathews has improved.

As for Peters, he has not practiced all week after leaving the Carolina game with back spasms. Right tackle Lane Johnson has practiced on the left side and is prepared to take Peters’ spot on the quarterback’s blind side. If Peters can’t play, that would be the plan. If Peters feels better Sunday then Johnson would slide back to right tackle.

Agholor has missed the last two games with a high ankle sprain. He indicated during the week that he expected to play in Dallas.
