With four picks, 49ers could be major players on draft's second day

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The San Francisco 49ers threw a bit of a curveball Thursday night when they used the No. 9 overall pick on Notre Dame offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey.

The plan gained more clarity when the Niners dealt right tackle Trent Brown and a fifth-round pick to New England for a third-round pick on Friday morning. Now, the 49ers own four picks on Friday night, which puts them in position to be as active as they want to be. It also could allow them to address some serious needs at cornerback, linebacker, edge rusher, wide receiver and elsewhere.

Here's a look at some of the options the Niners have in the draft's second and third rounds as well as some leftover thoughts from Thursday night:

-- After dealing Brown, the Niners have eight picks remaining. They are:

Round 2 – 59th overall

Round 3 – 70th

Round 3 – 74th

Round 3 - 95th

Round 4 – 128th

Round 6 – 184th

Round 7 – 227th

Round 7 – 240th

Because they traded their own second-round choice to the Patriots for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, the Niners faced a 50-pick gap between their first and second choices. There's no problem with that, considering the return it got them, but now that they have three third-round picks, they appear to be well positioned to close that gap if they choose. Depending on who is available and how far up they'd want to move, the Niners could package pick No. 59, one of their third-rounders and a later pick to get on the clock earlier than projected Friday night.

-- While right tackle wasn't exactly a pressing need, the Niners clearly believe they got the best tackle in the draft in McGlinchey, who can help immediately on the right side and be the eventual replacement for Joe Staley on the left side.

"We felt like both in the short-term and in the long-term at a premium position, particularly when you've just invested in a quarterback and more so than that, just an important position in football, and you couple that with, take the position, who are the players that excite you most," general manager John Lynch said. "This was a guy, and last week, we decided that if he's there at nine, he's the guy we're taking. We had other players that we had to prepare and we probably had a list of four. We were going to listen to some offers if McGlinchey wasn't there, but we had other guys in line. But, we're very pleased to have added Mike McGlinchey to our team.”

The Niners kept their affinity for McGlinchey a secret, as they didn't even talk to him after a formal interview at the scouting combine in February. But Lynch also intimated that the buzz for McGlinchey only started to gain steam late in the process and it wasn't until about a week before the draft that the Niners realized they'd have to take him at No. 9 or risk losing him to another team. In fact, that coin toss with the Oakland Raiders at the combine appeared to loom large as the Raiders were also connected to McGlinchey and traded out of the 10th spot after the Niners took him. Oakland went on to take UCLA tackle Kolton Miller at No. 15.

-- With McGlinchey onboard, the Niners still have some pressing needs to address, especially on defense. They passed on some top talent on that side of the ball in the first round, namely Alabama defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick, Florida State safety Derwin James, Virginia Tech linebacker Tremaine Edmunds and Texas-San Antonio pass rusher Marcus Davenport. Still, there appears to be plenty of talent remaining on the draft's second day. In fact, many scouts believe the sweet spot for this draft falls Friday night, which means once again the Niners are well positioned to add some talent capable of contributing right away.

-- Some names to know at different positions as the second and third rounds begin Friday night:

Edge rusher -- Harold Landry (Boston College), Josh Sweat (Florida State), Uchenna Nwosu (USC), Obo Okoronkwo (Oklahoma), Arden Key (LSU), Sam Hubbard (Ohio State), Lorenzo Carter (Georgia), Kemoko Turay (Rutgers) and Rasheem Greene (USC). According to a report from NFL Network, Landry fell out of the first round because of some medical concerns. That's one thing that's always difficult to account for as teams have access to medical information that the public doesn't. Many believe Landry is a top-15 to -20 talent but medical questions would explain that fall. The question is how serious those concerns are.

Cornerback -- Josh Jackson (Iowa), Isaiah Oliver (Colorado), Carlton Davis (Auburn), Quenton Meeks (Stanford), Holton Hill (Texas).

Linebacker -- Jerome Baker (Ohio State), Fred Warner (BYU), Josey Jewell (Iowa), Malik Jefferson (Texas).

Wide receiver -- Courtland Sutton (SMU), Anthony Miller (Memphis), James Washington (Oklahoma State), D.J. Chark (LSU), Christian Kirk (Texas A&M), Auden Tate (Florida State), Dante Pettis (Washington).

-- While those four positions appear to be the most pressing needs, the Niners could also be tempted by top players at other spots who might just be too good to pass up. Among those who could fit that description are Texas OL Connor Williams, Nevada OL Austin Corbett, South Dakota State TE Dallas Goedert, Penn State TE Mike Gesicki, Georgia RB Nick Chubb, USC RB Ronald Jones II, Auburn RB Kerryon Johnson and Oregon RB Royce Freeman.
