Georgia running back recruit Stanley Williams (Monroe, Ga./Georgia Walton Academy) said a recent report in which he said he had visited Notre Dame last weekend was "a big misunderstanding" and that he did not visit the South Bend, Ind., campus.
Blue and Gold Illustrated quoted Wiliams as saying he was at Notre Dame on Saturday, and "the visit went great."
"It was great to experience something new and different, and we had a great time at the game," Williams said, according to the website. "I had been looking forward to it for a while, and it was great to just get out there and see a new place. I plan on getting up there a couple more times in the future."
The article also said tight ends coach Scott Booker told him to expect an offer from the Irish soon.
Williams is now disputing he made the comments, after it became clear that he did not visit Notre Dame.
"It was just a big misunderstanding," Williams said. "I just don't want people to think I have a bad reputation of lying or saying where I am going and things like that. But I told them I wasn't going to be able to make it, because I had a basketball game. When they texted me and asked if I was going, I said I was supposed to go, but some other things came up. We had a game on Saturday, and I wasn't able to make it."
Williams said he was contacted Saturday by a number of reporters asking if he was on campus, visiting Notre Dame for its Junior Day.
"I told them that I wasn't able to make it," he said. "Before I told them that I wasn't going, someone said that they had seen me there, but I wasn't really there, so it has gotten blown all out of proportion."
Williams' father, Stanley Williams Sr., also confirmed that his son did not make the trip. "If we were to go someplace, we would do it right," the elder Williams said. "We certainly wouldn't tell a lie about nothing."
However, Williams was at a loss to explain quotes attributed to him in which he described his visit to Notre Dame.
"Those are incorrect," Williams said. "I never told anyone I was going anywhere I wouldn't be. I approach the media well, and I tell the truth about my recruitment."
Pressed on where the quotes came from, Williams said of the reporters, "Well, I can't really say what they did and what they didn't [do]."
Williams maintains he is still committed to Georgia.
"Most definitely I am a Dawg," Williams said. "Nothing has changed my mind so far in the recruiting process."
However, he told DawgNation on Dec. 27, "My commitment is obviously not as strong as it was before, when I first committed, because of the running backs they have now and [recruiting coordinator Rodney] Garner leaving. It definitely had an effect on how I feel now, but we have a while to go so we will just see what happens."
In that same interview, Williams expressed interest in Auburn, where Garner now coaches, Clemson and Alabama.
