SEM Phoenix, Williams agreed to part ways

American big-man Alan Williams and the South East Melbourne Phoenix have agreed to a mutual release, the team will announce on Thursday.

Williams, who had one season remaining on the two-year deal he signed in the 2023 off-season, will have his contract for the 2024-25 NBL campaign terminated.

The parting of ways comes after the Phoenix conducted a thorough review of its performance processes, with an expectation that more internal roster movement could be on the horizon.

"I just want to thank the Phoenix, the organisation and most importantly the fans for the love they showed me in my time here," Williams said.

"This was my first time in Australia and I loved it, the Phoenix played a big part in that and I'll forever be part of the Heartland."

Williams has been among the Phoenix's most productive players over the course of his two seasons with the franchise, averaging 16.7 points and 10.9 rebounds per game over his past campaign, but played just 15 games due to injury.

The Phoenix finished the 2023-24 season with a 10-18 record - worst in the league - in large part due to multiple injuries to start the 2024 calendar year.

The 31-year-old led the NBL in rebounding over his two seasons in the league, and made as much of an impact off the court.

He vocally embraced Australia and its culture, and ventured heavily into the media space during his time in the country.

"Alan will forever be a big part of the history of the Phoenix and will leave an indelible mark on this club and our fans," Phoenix CEO Tommy Greer said.

"His efforts on court were matched by the work he did in the community through club programs and as a public advocate for the Phoenix. We wish Alan and Cassidy all the best on whatever is to come in the future and thank them for being part of the Phoenix."

With Williams departing, the Phoenix now currently have Mitch Creek, Owen Foxwell, Matt Kenyon, Ben Ayre, and Rhys Vague contracted going into free agency.
