All Queensland-based AFL players must get flu shot

Flu vaccinations will be compulsory for all players who are based or forced to relocate to Queensland in an effort to restart the 2020 AFL season.

Earlier this month the league took a non-compulsory stance on flu vaccines. The AFL advised its players to receive the jab, but did not make it mandatory like the NRL.

However, with the Queensland state government opting for stricter COVID-19 protocols, the vaccination decision will be taken out of players' hands. This has a flow-on effect to several South Australian and Western Australia-based clubs, who are looking at relocating to Queensland.

"Certainly the clubs based [in Queensland] will have to have flu shots," AFL CEO Gillon McLachan told AFL Media. "I know both Queensland clubs (Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast Suns) have already done it and I know that the other clubs are in the process of doing that. Players will have them or they won't play."

On Friday, the AFL announced the season would resume on June 11. Full contact training could take place from May 25.

"The competition will resume on June 11. All players are being informed of protocols they need to follow. This will also apply for umpires and key match day staff," McLachlan said. "We know as this situation continues to evolve, we have to remain flexible to adapt. We need to prioritise the health and welfare of everyone."
