Fans to return to Metricon Stadium for Suns-Crows clash

Metricon Stadium will be the latest AFL venue to welcome back crowds after the Queensland government gave Gold Coast the green light to have 2,000 spectators in attendance when the Suns face Adelaide on Sunday.

The same goes for the Gold Coast Titans who host St George Illawarra in the NRL on Saturday afternoon, albeit up the road at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane rather than their Cbus Super Stadium home.

The relaxing of COVID-19 protocol in Queensland comes one week after the South Australian government allowed 2,000 fans to attend Round 2's Showdown at Adelaide Oval.

"This is a great announcement for our members and for AFL in this State and we thank the Queensland Government," Suns CEO Mark Evans said in a statement. "Obviously we wish all our members could be there cheering on their team but a crowd of up to 2,000 is a great start and we can't wait to see SUNS people back at our games from this weekend."

The Suns will now need to determine which members will be granted access to the game. Evans outlined the process the club will follow in selecting these fans.

"My message to Suns members wanting to attend the game is keep your eyes on your email," he said. "We have been planning for this announcement but we need to act fast to provide a fair and easy process for our members, as well as allowing the time needed to allocate and issue tickets. We hope our members understand the urgency.

"Obviously some people will be disappointed they can't attend this Sunday -- and we share that disappointment -- but we are confident crowd numbers will safely increase over the coming weeks and we will do our best to look after our valued members."

The news could mean fans would be able to attend Round 5's highly-anticipated clash between Richmond and West Coast at Metricon Stadium.

Titans chief executive Steve Mitchell also thanked the Queensland government, Gold Coast getting the jump on NRL counterparts Canberra Raiders who on Tuesday announced their intention to bring fans back to GIO Stadium in a fortnight's time.

"This is obviously great news for the Titans and the NRL, but for fans of sports across Queensland," Mitchell said.

"The past few months have been tough on everyone, and the hard work done by the NRL in getting our competition restarted gave us a feeling that life was finally returning to normal.

"Thanks to the Premier and her Government in containing the virus in Queensland, we are now at the stage where we are able to take the next step on the journey back to normal life, with 2000 spectators able to come to Suncorp Stadium on Saturday to enjoy a day at the footy."
