Five things you may or may not know about Austin Davis, who will start for the Cleveland Browns at quarterback Sunday:
1. Brett Favre and Davis both played collegiately at Southern Miss, where Davis wound up breaking Favre’s records. Last season, Favre offered this thought on Davis to ESPN’s Ed Werder: “Not so sound off my rocker, but (Davis), in my mind, can be the next Tom Brady or Kurt Warner.”
2. Davis went to high school in Collinsville, Mississippi, a community northwest of Meridian that sits along Lake Okatibbee (2010 population: 1,948). His high school coach, Stan McCain, told USA Today he remembered Davis and a group of friends often fishing, though when he wasn’t, Davis usually was in the batting cage or throwing a football. Davis won more games at West Lauderdale High School than anyone before him, and as a senior rushed and threw for 1,700 yards and 21 touchdowns. But West Lauderdale ran the Wing-T offense, which limited his scholarship offers. He was offered just one to play football -- from Southeastern Louisiana.
3. Davis attended Southern Miss on a baseball scholarship, but played only one year of college baseball. Despite that he was drafted by the Boston Red Sox.
4. Davis knows what it means to earn his way. He walked on at Southern Miss, started as a freshman, set 15 records and led the Golden Eagles to a bowl game. He ended his college career with just about every passing record there is at Southern Miss., but always talked about winning the conference title first. When told of Favre’s comments, he said he was humbled by the remark. And since he’s joined the Browns, he’s talked mainly of staying in his lane and doing his job. As recently as two weeks ago he said he had not gotten a single rep other than with the scout team. He shrugged, said that’s what happens when you join a team after preseason, and said he just had to take advantage of the chances he got. He started eight games for the Rams last season, and Rams coach Jeff Fisher said he was “not a 9-to-5 guy" -- meaning he puts in all the extra work he can. Davis was not in the least afraid to sign a two-year contract extension in September with a team that already had Johnny Manziel on the roster.
5. Davis' first starting experience last season in St. Louis brought mixed results. He won three games before being benched after throwing four interceptions in his final two games. The three wins, though, are as many as Brady Quinn and Jeff Garcia had for the Browns, and more than Jason Campbell, Josh McCown, Manziel, Thad Lewis, Seneca Wallace and Jake Delhomme.
