GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The Green Bay Packers cut their roster to 53 on Saturday. Here's a look at the 53-man roster with starters in bold:
QUARTERBACKS (3): Aaron Rodgers, DeShone Kizer, Tim Boyle
Rodgers has his $134 million extension. Kizer is the new Brett Hundley, taking over as Rodgers’ backup. And the strong-armed Boyle reversed the trend of the Packers cutting undrafted rookie QBs (like Taysom Hill last year).
RUNNING BACKS (3): Jamaal Williams, Ty Montgomery, Darius Jackson.
The Packers signed former Cowboys RB Jackson, a source confirmed. Jackson, a sixth-round pick 2016, has not had a carry in an NFL regular-season game. He had a knee injury last season. They need someone else before Aaron Jones comes off suspension for Week 3.
FULLBACKS (0)
They had two fullbacks -- Ripkowski and Joe Kerridge -- on the roster for last season’s finale. Now they have none.
RECEIVERS (7): Davante Adams, Randall Cobb, Geronimo Allison, J’Mon Moore, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Equanimeous St. Brown, Trevor Davis
Two years ago, it seemed unheard of when they kept seven receivers. It’s one more -- for now. The Packers reportedly tried to trade Davis, whose value is on special teams as a returner and cover man. Jake Kumerow's shoulder injury landed him on injured reserve. He would be eligible to return in Week 9 if the Packers wanted to use one of their return moves on him.
TIGHT ENDS (4): Jimmy Graham, Lance Kendricks, Marcedes Lewis, Robert Tonyan
Tonyan played his way onto the roster with a strong preseason. Kendricks’ roster spot seemed shaky after a preseason filled with drops.
OFFENSIVE LINE (9): David Bakhtiari, Lane Taylor, Corey Linsley, Justin McCray, Bryan Bulaga, Lucas Patrick, Jason Spriggs, Byron Bell, Alex Light
Last year, the Packers kept 10. Two years ago, they kept 8. What they need is for Bakhtiari and Bulaga to stay healthy because their backup tackles are shaky. Kyle Murphy (ankle) is on IR and presumably done for the year (the only way he could come back is with an injury settlement). Light was one of four undrafted rookies to make it.
DEFENSIVE LINE (5): Mike Daniels, Kenny Clark, Muhammad Wilkerson, Dean Lowry, Montravius Adams
New defensive coordinator Mike Pettine might play more traditional 3-4 than Dom Capers did, so that could necessitate a lot of snaps for this group.
INSIDE LINEBACKERS (5): Blake Martinez, Oren Burks, Antonio Morrison, James Crawford
Jake Ryan’s season-ending knee injury and Oren Burks' shoulder injury put the Packers in the trade market, and they got Morrison in a trade from the Colts. That, along with undrafted rookie James Crawford’s late emergence (he wasn’t signed until Aug. 8) aced out Greer Martini and Ahmad Thomas, Korey Toomer.
OUTSIDE LINEBACKERS (4): Clay Matthews, Nick Perry, Reggie Gilbert, Kyler Fackrell
Looks like new GM Brian Gutekunst didn’t care for his predecessor Ted Thompson’s pick of Vince Biegel in the fourth round last year. He waived Biegel 16 months after the Packers took him. It leaves the Packers light on edge rushers, especially considering Gilbert’s inexperience and Fackrell’s lack of production.
CORNERBACKS (5): Kevin King, Tramon Williams, Jaire Alexander, Davon House, Josh Jackson
Quinten Rollins’ hamstring injury probably cost him a spot. He was placed on IR.
SAFETIES (5): Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Kentrell Brice, Josh Jones, Jermaine Whitehead, Raven Greene
Greene, an undrafted free agent, beat out Marwin Evans, who had played 190 defensive snaps over the last two years.
SPECIALISTS (3): K Mason Crosby, P JK Scott, LS Hunter Bradley
The Packers went with Bradley, a seventh-round pick, over Zach Triner in a close competition. They’ve shown no interest in bringing back veteran snapper Brett Goode to this point.
