Perth Lynx have been granted a free pass to the WNBL Grand Final after the UC Capitals were forced to withdraw from Game II of the pair's semifinal series due to a shortage of players.
The Capitals were hit by a COVID-19 outbreak over the weekend and many players were placed into health and safety protocols, meaning Sunday's game couldn't be played.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Capitals confirmed they would not be travelling to Perth to play the final game, thus forfeiting the series and sending the Lynx to the Grand Final.
The final game of the series had been scheduled for April 6 at the Bendat Basketball Centre. The Lynx now win the series 1-0.
The league released a statement shortly after the Capitals' announcement.
"While a disappointing outcome for Capitals fans, the league understands and respects their decision, not to travel to Perth," the statement read. "Perth Lynx will now contest the WNBL Grand Final against the minor premiers, the Melbourne Boomers, who earned their place on Saturday by defeating the Adelaide Lightning."
