HOUSTON -- Tests showed that Houston Texans right tackle Tytus Howard has a partially torn MCL in his left knee, a source confirmed to ESPN.
The Houston Chronicle first reported the news. Howard was carted off the field in the third quarter on Sunday during the Texans' 31-24 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. After the game, head coach Bill O'Brien said he was told Howard's injury looked worse than it was, and that Houston is hopeful the right tackle can play again this season.
Howard, a 2019 first-round pick out of Alabama State, started the season at left guard before being moved to right tackle in Week 3. Howard played well after the position change; entering Week 5, he had the third-best Pass Block Win Rate among offensive tackles, according to ESPN metrics powered by NFL Next Gen Stats data.
After allowing 18 sacks in their first four games, the Texans have not allowed a sack in their last two games. Tackle Roderick Johnson replaced Howard on Sunday and is expected to start at right tackle until Howard's return.
