Cardinals should focus on cornerback, wide receiver at combine

Here is a closer look at the positions the Arizona Cardinals could target at the NFL combine in Indianapolis:

Positions of need: The Cardinals could be looking for help at nine positions, depending how free agency turns out, but there are a handful that have greater importance: Cornerback, inside linebacker and wide receiver. There's no question Arizona needs to find a long-term answer at cornerback opposite Patrick Peterson. An NFL-ready rookie, who could start from day one without having to adjust to a learning curve, would solve a significant problem in the Cardinals' secondary. Regardless of whether Kevin Minter, Arizona's starting inside linebacker the past two seasons, returns in 2017, Arizona needs to find depth to complement Minter and Deone Bucannon, the hybrid linebacker who is still adjusting to life inside the box.

With Michael Floyd gone, the Cardinals are left with one elite big-bodied receiver: Larry Fitzgerald. Finding a sidekick to Fitzgerald for at least one season will help revive the Cardinals' vertical passing game. This same wide receiver needs to have what it takes to become a No. 1 when Fitzgerald retires. Two other positions the Cardinals could focus on in Indianapolis are running back -- with Chris Johnson, Andre Ellington and Stepfan Taylor upcoming free agents -- and safety, with Tony Jefferson and D.J. Swearinger slated to be free agents on March 9, which leaves a unit of Tyrann Mathieu and Tyvon Branch.

Three players the Cardinals could focus on at the combine:

Mike Williams, WR, Clemson: It's plausible that Williams, the best receiver in this year's draft, falls to the Cardinals at No. 13. If he's there, this might be a no-brainer for general manager Steve Keim & Co. Williams has the size, strength, speed and talent to become the Cardinals' No. 1 receiver, a role he'll take over when Fitzgerald retires. Williams showed off his skill set and ability to take over during the national championship game, which also proved that he's healthy after suffering a broken vertebrae in his neck in 2015.

Teez Tabor, CB, Florida: One of the top cornerbacks in this year's class, Tabor has the size and quickness to be a man-press corner for the Cardinals. Tabor is a natural cornerback with a nose for the ball -- he had eight interceptions as a junior at Florida last season and returned three for touchdowns. He had some off-the-field issues at Florida and was suspended for a game.

Reuben Foster, ILB, Alabama: Foster is a linebacker who can accomplish two things for the Cardinals: provide either a starter or a reliable backup and bring more athleticism to the interior. He has the speed and quickness to track down ball carriers, move sideline-to-sideline, and he can hit -- a trait that's necessary to follow in the footsteps of Minter and Bucannon.
