Dreaming of Philip Rivers and Titans in 2016

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Fantasy scenarios are best left to fantasy football.

While I understand how and why fans dream of their team making a giant trade or a big signing and it changing the entire fortune and direction of the franchise, such moves are pretty rare.

Here is one I will grant Titans fans can understandably dream about.

Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers told Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune that he anticipates playing out the final year of his contract and assessing things come 2016.

Rivers will be 34 then, which isn’t young but can still qualify as the prime of top NFL quarterbacks. He is absolutely one of them.

He has a big family, and he’s concerned about the Chargers’ potential move to Los Angeles.

The franchise will go a long way to ensure Rivers remains its quarterback.

But there is a conceivable scenario where he’d want out. And if he wants out, the Titans could rank high on a list of his desired landing spots.

He’s from Athens, Alabama, which is only about 100 miles south of Nashville.

He had success playing with Ken Whisenhunt as his offensive coordinator with the Chargers in 2013.

Don’t go crazy. There are a lot of variables and they are all nearly a year away.

  • We aren’t sure where the Titans will be at quarterback.

  • We aren’t sure that Whisenhunt still will be in place.

  • We aren’t sure the Chargers' situation will be so uncertain.

  • We aren’t sure Rivers won’t change his thinking.

  • We aren't sure the Chargers wouldn't tag him to ensure he stays.

We are sure Nashville is close to home, and that Rivers is the kind of guy for whom that is important.

As dreams go, dreaming of Rivers trading a lightning bolt for a flame ball seems like a good one.
