2016 Tennessee Titans game-by-game predictions

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Titans just pulled in a big haul of picks that give them six of the top 76 in the draft at the end of the month. The schedule came out Wednesday night, and the schedule demands predictions despite the fact we don’t have a full roster to assess and the veterans haven’t even reassembled. I’m making these picks, for example, with no idea who’s playing right tackle. Odds I’m right here? Very low. But have fun!

Week 1: Sunday, Sept. 9, vs. Minnesota Vikings, 1 p.m. ET

Win. The Vikings were a playoff team in 2015 and they will get a boost from playing home game in a sparkling new venue, though that’s not a factor in this one. Safety Michael Griffin will return to play against the team that drafted him in 2007. The terrible Titans of 2014 and 2015 were good at wining their openers. Record: 1-0.

Week 2: Sunday, Sept. 18, at Detroit Lions, 1 p.m. ET

Loss. The Lions have gotten less threatening over the past couple years as they’ve lost Ndamukong Suh and Calvin Johnson. I still see them as good enough to beat the Titans in Detroit. Record: 1-1

Week 3: Sunday, Sept. 25, vs. Oakland Raiders, 1 p.m. ET

Loss. Whether people know it or not, Derek Carr is one of the best young QBs in the NFL. He played well last season in an Oakland win at Nissan Stadium with 330 yards passing and three TDs. Record: 1-2.

Week 4: Sunday, Oct. 2, at Houston Texans, 1 p.m. ET

Loss. While Brock Osweiler should give he Texans steadier quarterback play, he still may rank as the fourth-best QB in the division. The Titans seek to ensure that ranking by attacking him. But they need to do better fending off J.J. Watt so their quarterback, Marcus Mariota, can do good work. Center Ben Jones, who jumped from the Texans to the Titans as a free agent and is close with Watt, can't help the cause enough on the road. Record: 1-3.

Week 5: Sunday, Oct. 9, at Miami Dolphins, 1 p.m. ET

Loss. Jim Washburn, once one of the Titans best assistant coaches, is now coaching the Dolphins' defensive line. I don’t think these teams will wind up a whole lot different. I do think Washburn and the defense will find ways to make the Titans struggle to protect Mariota. Record: 1-4.

Week 6: Sunday Oct. 16, vs. Cleveland Browns, 1 p.m. ET

Win. The Browns and Titans have been among the worst teams in the NFL the past two seasons. But the Browns have won the head-to-head games in both seasons. The Titans seems to be making moves to climb from the bottom while the Browns still seem to be bottoming out. Record: 2-4.

Week 7: Sunday Oct. 23, vs. Indianapolis Colts, 1 p.m. ET

Loss. The Titans have lost nine games in a row to the Colts, and are overdue for a breakthrough. Lately, it has been two teams with bad offensive lines, but the winner has done better working around the deficiency. The Colts are that team again. Record: 2-5.

Week 8: Thursday, Oct. 27, vs. Jacksonville Jaguars, 8:25 p.m. ET

Win. The Jaguars and Titans have split their season series for nine consecutive seasons. Jacksonville made an offensive breakthrough last year and has invested heavily in defense this offseason. This is a Thursday night game for the third year, but is finally in Nashville. Record: 3-5.

Week 9: Sunday, Nov. 6, at San Diego, 4:25 p.m. ET

Win. The Titans have a deep knowledge of Ken Whisenhunt’s offense, because they tried to run it during 23 games over the past two years. I’ll take a Dick LeBeau defense against a Whisenhunt coordinated offense, even with wily veteran Philip Rivers running it. Record: 4-5.

Week 10: Sunday, Nov. 13, vs. Green Bay Packers, 1 p.m. ET

Loss. Aaron Rodgers and the Packers offense will bounce back in a season more like we are used to. And the Titans pass defense, no matter whatever improvements it makes, will have a tough time. Record: 4-6.

Week 11: Sunday, Nov. 20, at Indianapolis Colts, 1 p.m. ET

Win. It’s time. By accident, freak of nature or by actually playing well enough over the course of 60 minutes, the Titans withstand Andrew Luck and find a way to beat the Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium after 10 consecutive losses. Record: 5-6.

Week 12: Sunday, Nov. 27, at Chicago Bears, 1 p.m. ET

Loss. A young team doesn’t do a great job rebounding from a big win and falls off a week later in a frigid Soldier Field. The Bears new inside linebackers -- Jerrell Freeman and Danny Trevathan -- help put the clamps on DeMarco Murray and the Titans run game. Record: 5-7.

Week 13: BYE

Week 14: Sunday, Dec. 11, vs. Denver Broncos, 1 p.m. ET

Loss. We don’t know who will be quarterbacking the Broncos. We do know that a Super-Bowl defense still has a lot of pieces who can make the Titans, and plenty of other teams, struggle badly. Record: 5-8.

Week 15: Sunday, Dec. 18, at Kansas City Chiefs, 1 p.m. ET

Loss. The Titans have five wins combined in the last two seasons. It’s pretty remarkable that one of them came at Arrowhead Stadium on opening day in 2014. I don’t see the Titans winning there twice in three seasons. Record: 5-9.

Week 16: Sunday, Dec. 24, at Jacksonville Jaguars, 1 p.m. ET

Loss. The split streak is extended to a 10th season, as the Jaguars avenge their Thursday night loss to the Titans in Week 8. Whatever moves the Titans have made at cornerback don’t work in this one, as Blake Bortles connects with his weapons too often, and too deep. Record: 5-10.

Week 17: Sunday, Jan. 1, vs. Houston Texans, 1 p.m. ET

Win. Happy New Year’s. The Titans finish big, splitting with the Texans and making for a .500 record in the AFC South, which counts as a giant development in a 6-10 season that doubles the win total from 2015’s miserable showing. Record: 6-10.
