Chargers restructure DT Corey Liuget's contract

COSTA MESA, Calif. -- As the Los Angeles Chargers begin offseason work Monday, the front office is tidying up some business.

I can confirm the Chargers and defensive tackle Corey Liuget agreed to terms on a restructured deal, which likely means he’s taking a pay cut. The NFL Network first reported the transaction.

Selected No. 18 overall by the Chargers in the 2011 draft, the 28-year-old Liuget was slated to make $8 million in total compensation for the 2018 season.

However, Liuget was suspended without pay for the first four games of the year for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs, so the Chargers already obtained a $2 million discount on his salary.

The Chargers also will get a $2 million credit toward the team's salary cap in 2019.

The University of Illinois product played solid inside defensively last season, finishing with 21 combined tackles, 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble in 12 games played, garnering Pro Bowl votes.

However, Liuget has just 4.5 sacks in the last three seasons and the Chargers have young, emerging talent at the defensive tackle position in Darius Philon and Isaac Rochell.

In seven NFL seasons, Liuget has recorded 260 combined tackles and 22.5 sacks.
