The countdown is on. One hundred days until SummerSlam. Not that we're counting. And not that we're excited.
So what will be the main event, you ask? The prevailing notion is that in one way or another Universal Champ Brock Lesnar will be involved. But again whom?
Here's what our resident wrestling scribes think:
Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns vs. Braun Strowman
As frustrating as it is for Lesnar to be off of TV for such a long time as the Universal champion, the second he returns to the airwaves he will reignite an increasingly frustrating situation in the upper echelons of Monday Night Raw. Paul Heyman made it clear (to a chorus of boos) on the Raw after WrestleMania that Lesnar and Reigns, the two men who defeated The Undertaker at WrestleMania, were destined to meet. It would be a mistake to put this one-on-one match in front of a crowd that won't accept anything they perceive as being force-fed to them, even if it's with two guys they like, as was the case in 2016 when they actively derailed the Universal championship match between Finn Balor and Seth Rollins. After getting some time to rest up, Strowman will be the antidote to some of those feelings, and a title opportunity on one of the biggest shows of the year against Lesnar and Reigns would be a major shot in the arm for Strowman. The Reigns vs. Lesnar one-on-one match can be used to prop up a secondary level pay-per-view, but this is NOT the crowd to try to pull this off in front of. -- Tim Fiorvanti
Brock Lesnar vs. Braun Strowman
While Strowman is currently out of action with an elbow injury, he is still expected back well before SummerSlam. That would give him a chance to end his current feud with Roman Reigns and set him up as a worthy adversary for the Beast Incarnate. Braun has been built as a monster since he debuted on the main roster, and this year feels like the right time for him to get a shot at a championship at a marquee event. SummerSlam is the second biggest WWE show of the year (outside of WrestleMania), so what better way to end it than with a clash of arguably the two most intimidating figures in the company for the Universal Championship? Both Braun and Brock are physically imposing, but they have also proved to be capable of wrestling outstanding matches, so putting both in the ring together could create the kind of "wow" moments wrestling fans crave. -- Andrew Smith
Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns vs. Braun Strowman
I think the main event of SummerSlam is setting up to be the rematch of WrestleMania 31's main event, with champion Lesnar defending his title against Reigns. Lesnar's advocate, Paul Heyman, has requested the match, and why would Reigns turn it down? But why not spice things up, a la WrestleMania 31, and make it a triple threat. Strowman's performances in the past couple of months have been deserving of a spot in the main event and the title picture. Throw the "Mountain Among Men" in there and let's see a true battle of strength with Lesnar, Strowman and Reigns squaring off for the Universal Title. -- Matt Willis
AJ Styles vs. Randy Orton
What, no love for the Blue Brand? Smackdown Live fans have been waiting to see Styles finally get his one-on-one match for the WWE Championship. Styles and Orton gave us a tease of what they could do with each other in an early-March SmackDown showdown. SummerSlam would be a phenomenal stage for Styles to complete his quest for the title and get a shot at Orton, who is in need of some big moments as champion. Also, with Money In The Bank being a Smackdown Live exclusive event, could we see a repeat of 2011 and 2013, with a cash-in closing the show? -- Sachin Chandan
Seth Rollins vs. Brock Lesnar vs. Finn Balor
A combination of Strowman, Reigns and Lesnar might seem more likely, but don't sleep on the participants from last year's Summerslam Universal Title matchup, Seth Rollins and Finn Balor. Rollins will be deserving of a title shot after defeating Triple H at WrestleMania and holding his own against Samoa Joe. Rollins also has a history with Brock Lesnar, facing him at Battleground in 2015 in a match that was short-lived because of interference by The Undertaker. Balor never lost the Universal Title in the first place and will be worthy of a chance to get it back after his upcoming feud with Bray Wyatt. This match would remind fans of the Lesnar-Rollins-John Cena triple threat at the 2015 Royal Rumble, which is considered one of the best WWE matches in recent years. -- Michael Wonsover
Brock Lesnar vs. Braun Strowman
Strowman's elbow injury came at an unfortunate time as he has been the hottest act going during the past couple of months. Lucky for him, the anticipated timetable for his return is four to eight weeks and just in time to set up a program with the Beast Incarnate -- an encounter that was hinted at when Strowman confronted the champ at the RAW after WrestleMania. It's a fresh matchup and the right decision to headline the biggest event of the summer. -- Sean Coyle
AJ Styles vs. Brock Lesnar
Money in the Bank is coming up as a SmackDown-only pay-per-view but, considering that the show's writing is theoretically fluid, the stipulations of cashing in that contract for a title shot could easily be changed, or simply not explained well enough to the viewer. So say Styles loses to Kevin Owens at Backlash, but is part of the Money in the Bank match and wins his opportunity. Styles then cashes in the Money in the Bank contract on Brock Lesnar before SummerSlam, winning the title and leading to a really intriguing rematch and main event in Brooklyn. -- Andrew Feldman
Brock Lesnar vs. Braun Strowman vs. Roman Reigns
The WWE needs to capitalize on one of the hottest acts going right now -- injury be damned -- Braun Strowman. Currently out with an elbow injury, he is set to miss June's Extreme Rules pay-per-view and possibly July's Great Balls of Fire (still can't believe that name). Barring any setbacks, he should return in plenty of time to set up a triple threat match for Lesnar's WWE Universal Championship along with rival Reigns at SummerSlam. It would surely be one of the hardest hitting matches WWE has seen in a long time, and more than worthy of the SummerSlam main event. -- Nicolas Irving
Brock Lesnar vs. Finn Balor
It's tempting to make this a Brock-Braun showdown, but that showdown one feels like it needs to wait a little longer, especially with Strowman out for a few weeks (or more) with an elbow injury. And, please, spare us Roman Reigns in the main event, just this once. We understand his love-hate allure, but the "wow" factor is about as great as Aiden English's singing career. So bring in Balor, who never officially lost his title he won a year ago at SummerSlam, and now you have a great juxtaposition with Lesnar as well as the potential for a great in-ring match that could match the hype. -- Matt Wilansky
